Basketball Rules

Kindergarten/1st Grade

 

Hopewell Recreation Ministry Leadership reserves the right to make any changes that they deem necessary for the betterment of the league and its play.


Unsportsmanlike Conduct

No coach or player shall belittle or berate the players, coaches or fans of another team. This type of action will NOT be tolerated. First offense: Warning. Second offense: Ejection from game. PENALTY: Any coach or player ejected from a game will be suspended for a minimum of 1 game up to a maximum of the remainder of the season. Any coach ejected from a game will be required to meet in person with the Hopewell Recreation Minister before coaching another game. The coach is responsible to set up this meeting.

Coordinators & Referees may issue warnings to players, coaches or teams for team and personal unsportsmanlike conduct or safety concerns.

Harassment of officials and Hopewell Recreation Ministry Staff will not be tolerated. Questions should be asked by the HEAD COACH ONLY and done in an ORDERLY HUMANE and RESPECTFUL fashion about rule interpretations only. Judgment calls are NOT to be argued. Failure to comply with this rule will result in immediate ejection of the guilty party and possibly forfeiture of the game. NO WARNINGS WILL BE GIVEN!!

Judgment calls made by the referee shall NOT be contested.

There will be paid refs for each game.

 

- 4- 8 Minute running clock quarters. Clock stops during free throws, injuries and timeouts.
Goals will be set at 8 feet.

- Size 27.5 ball.

- Games will begin with Home team inbounding at midcourt. Jump ball situations during the game are determined by officials and possession is awarded as normal.

- No defense outside the 3-point line. Once the ball crosses the 3-point line defense is played as normal. The offensive team has ten seconds once the ball crosses mid-court to get the ball across the 3-point line.

- If the offensive team loses possession of the ball out of bounds before the ball gets to their 3-point line the offensive team retains possession. If the ball is lost out of bounds inside the 3- point line possession is decided following regular basketball rules.

- Foul Shots will be shot from 8 feet. Maximum of 3 players lined up on each side during foul shots. 7th team foul results in 1-and-1, 10th team foul results in 2 shots.

- No 3-point shots.

- No 3 seconds lane violation.

- Traveling and double dribbling will be called when it is excessive or results in offensive player gaining an advantage over the defending player inside the 3-point line.

- Score will be kept. If the winning team has a 15 point lead their leading scorers, equal to the number of subs you have sitting on the bench, must come out for the remainder of the quarter, or the time equivalent to a quarter or the lead drops to 10 points. Whichever comes first.

- Players are allowed 5 fouls.

- Coaches are allowed 4 timeouts, 2 per half.

- Substitutions are determined by the coach, but keep playing time as equal as possible. At least one female needs to be on the court at all times if your team has multiple females. 

- Regular season games may end in a tie.

- Tournament games will be decided by up to two 4-minute overtime periods. If the game remains tied after those two overtime periods, the game will be decided by a free throw shootout in a World Cup penalty kick format.

- Regular Middle School Rules.

o 10 seconds count to get the ball into the front court.

o 5 second count when closely guards.

o 3 second count in the lane.

- Size 28.5 ball for girls and 29.5 ball for boys.

- 4- 8 Minute running clock quarters. Clock stops during free throws, injuries and timeouts. The clock will stop in the last 2 minutes of the 2nd quarter and 4th quarter on out of bounds and jump balls in addition to free throws and injuries.

- Goal is set at 10 feet.

- Defense can play full court.

- Regular Foul Shot distance.

o   Players may enter the lane on release of the ball.

- Score will be kept. If the winning team has a 15 point lead their leading scorers, equal to the number of subs you have sitting on the bench, must come out for the remainder of the quarter, or the time equivalent to a quarter or until the lead drops to 10 points. Whichever comes first.

- Players are allowed 5 fouls.

- Coaches are allowed 4 timeouts, 2-30 second and 2 full.

- Regular season games may end in a tie.

- Tournament games will be decided by up to two 4-minute overtime periods. If the game remains tied after those two overtime periods, the game will be decided by a free throw shootout in a World Cup penalty kick format.
